Abstract

Regional-scale atmospheric simulation models with domains ranging from 2.5 × 10 5 km 2 to 4 × 10 6 km 2 with grid intervals varying from 30 km to 140 km are currently being tested and used in both research and operational modes. Examples of these models and their sensitivity to the magnitude and scale-resolution of the initial moisture distribution are presented. These examples demonstrate the influence of the moisture on both the developing model dynamics as well as on the forecast quantitative precipitation amounts.
