Abstract

To decrease the severity of water scarcity, using drought tolerant plants or enhancing plant adaptation for water deficits could be helpful. This investigation was carried out to study the impact of amino acids on drought tolerance of Cupressus macrocarpa immature seedlings. Drought conditions were created by growing seedlings under three different irrigation levels i.e., 50, 75 and 100% of soil available water within the same irrigation intervals. To enhance plant drought tolerance amino acids application was added monthly at 1, 1.5 and 2 g pot-1 as a soil drench. Results obtained clearly indicate that amino acids application significantly enhanced plant height, total biomass, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, root/shoot ratio, root, relative dry matter and relative water content compared with non-treated seedlings. High irrigation water conditions also increased the same parameters compared with low water conditions. When irrigation was combined with amino acids treatments the previous seedling parameters were improved even under low water conditions.
