Abstract

House dust mite allergies are important causes of allergic asthma and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therapeutic options for these disorders include environmental controls, antiallergic drugs and specific immunotherapy. Controlled clinical trials of dust mite immunotherapy for asthma and allergic rhinitis have generally demonstrated efficacy. Therapy with Dermatophagoides extracts that are standardized for allergenic potency are recommended. Caution should be exercised when treating young children or severe asthmatics because a high rate of systemic allergic reactions has been observed in these groups.
