Abstract

Objective To explore the imaging characteristics of cavernous sinus cavernous hemangioma(CSCH). Methods The imaging characteristics in 17 patients (3 male and 14 female, median age:47.4 years old) with pathologically proved CSCH were analyzed retrospectively. All patients underwent MRI and enhancement scan. 8 patients had CT scan , among them, 3 cases had CT enhancement scan. Results The imaging characteristics of 17 cases of CSCH included: (1)It was commonly seen in adult women, dumb bell-like, well-defined and had mass effect. It rarely had peritumoral edema, intratumoral haemorrhage or calcification.(2) MR images showed homogeneous hypointensity on T1-weighted images and hyperintensity on T2-weighted images with marked enhancement after contrast agent administration, markedly hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Delayed enhancement was its characteristic finding. (3) On CT scans, the lesions appeared as hyperdensity with strong enhancement and showed erosion of petrous bone. (4) DSA showed normal vascular or tumor blush in venous phase. Conclusion CSCH has characteristic imaging findings which combined with clinical history could help to make correct diagnosis.
