Abstract

The objective of this project is to compute happiness index of an image containing single or multiple persons. There are situations in social gatherings such as marriage and festivals, where large number of group photos is taken. If only few photos, say best ten, have to be selected for representing the whole occasion, manual selection is based on individual perception. Different individuals have different perception. In this project the perceptions are ranked in a 0–5 scale of happiness emotion content; thus trying to automate the process. Image processing techniques are used for computing happiness index of the image. Initially, faces in the image are detected, followed by expression classification such as happy, neutral and so on. If the image contains multiple persons, each person’s expression is given an individual happiness index. All the individual happiness indices are integrated to yield the image’s happiness index. Perceptions of different experts are used to validate the happiness indices. The different combinations of feature extraction, classification and integration is experimented so that the validation is as high as possible. This technique is validated on the benchmark HAPPEI database.
