Abstract
Fusion is a safe, sustainable and massive energy source whose profitable exploitation is a huge technological challenge. Over the past seventy years, numerous investigations and major experiments have brought us close enough to a viable solution to now have a well-defined roadmap, supported by two big experiments that will confirm, on the one hand, how fusion energy production should be optimized (ITER project) and, on the other hand, which materials are suitable for use in the most critical areas of future fusion reactors (IFMIF-DONES project). This article aims to convey the magnitude and the challenges faced by the latter.
