Intrathecal AAV9-Neprilysin Protects Against Perivascular Amyloid-β Accumulation in a Mouse Model of Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy

Targeting amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation seems a promising strategy for the treatment of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and neurodegenerative diseases. However, it is still challenging to develop a safe and efficient technology for brain-wide perivascular Aβ clearance. Using intrathecally injected adeno-associated virus 9 (AAV9) encoding soluble form of neprilysin (sNEP), we showed that AAV-sNEP reduced Aβ accumulation and improved cognitive deficits in Tg-SwDI transgenic mice. Meningeal cells, adventitial cells and smooth muscle cells in leptomeningeal arteries and penetrating arterioles were transfected by intrathecal injection of AAV9-sNEP, hence generating sufficient sNEP to exert beneficial effects by perivascular Aβ clearance, protecting against smooth muscle cell damage and pericyte loss, maintaining blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, and eventually improving cognitive decline in Tg-SwDI mice. This study provides pre-clinical evidence that intrathecal delivery of AAV-mediated sNEP may be a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of CAA. Innovating Elite Undergraduate Education through Quality Continuous Improvement

This chapter investigates a mechanism of organizational innovation serving to make sense of a maturing university community involving educational executives, academic staff, and students in the occasion of a new campus development, starting in the year 2009 and realizing in the year 2013, under the auspices of a national policy benefiting the long-term development of higher education in the Macau Special Administrative Region (Macau SAR) of China. It is understood that the university as a public institution should not be operated like a business enterprise, running on profit-making initiatives; yet, without the enterprising context, the transformation of the existing infrastructure could hardly be innovated effectively, especially regarding the productivity of its staff, both academic and administrative. As a university with a staff count of less than 1000 and a history of close to thirty years, the University of Macau (UM) is ready to steward an elite undergraduate education marked by a quality learning experience that could become her branding value in the immediate future. The question is how innovatively UM could scale up in this opportunistic growth to excel for the local community. This case study is aimed to investigate from the perspective of a learning enterprise, a reflective way of forward thinking to record the author’s observation and interpretation of what is entailed in this process of upbringing a relatively young university in this age-old city, Macau, famous for its rich heritage of East (Chinese) meeting West (Europeans – Portuguese). Of specific interest is the proper context of open innovation in university governance for organizational transformation. The chapter examines the accountability framework for undergraduate curriculum reform and by treating the electronic transformation (e-transformation) as one of the open innovation strategies, the chapter explores the e-transformation of the university environment, based on holistic concerns of the campus community. The challenge is to identify the organizational context of innovation, which lies in the realm of electronic governance (e-governance), referring mainly to the decisions that define expectations, enable empowerment, and verify performance of the systems in support of community engagement and shared responsibilities in campus development, providing a sense-making perspective to interpret what is entailed in the organizational innovation of the university in this precious occasion of campus relocation. In practice, the lessons learned behind the e-transformation of the learning enterprise should benefit all walks of our local community, including the community of the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Young Professionals’ Experience During High Efficiency Power Amplifier Student Design Competition [Young Professionals

The 18th High-Efficiency Power Amplifier (HEPA) Student Design Competition (SDC) took place at the 2022 IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS), on 21 June 2022. The competition was held by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) Microwave High-Power Techniques Committee (MTT-12) in collaboration with Keysight Technologies. This year’s event was held in person after two years of virtual competitions (the 16th and 17th HEPA SDCs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. IEEE Young Professionals (YPs) from all the around the world gathered in Denver, CO, USA, to participate in the competition and discuss their experience in the design of HEPAs.

The Young Professionals special session at the 2022 IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) International Wireless Symposium (IWS) was supported by the Young Professionals Committee of the MTT-S AdCom. IEEE Young Professionals are a group of IEEE Members and volunteers who have graduated with their first professional degree within the past 15 years. The group constitutes an international community whose members are interested in elevating their professional image, expanding their global network, connecting with peers locally, and giving back to their community. Since it encompasses all members, from recent university graduates to experienced professionals and entrepreneurs, the group is highly diverse in what it has to offer.

Ingestion of even small amounts of paraquat can be life-threatening. However, there is no specific antidote for this pesticide, which has a low lethal dose and high lethality in humans. Paraquat poisoning causes systemic toxicity with the primary target organ being the lungs, resulting in acute alveolitis and pulmonary fibrosis. It can also lead to multiple organ failure. This review summarizes the current clinical management of patients with paraquat poisoning and the potentially effective compounds reported in the literature and patents for the treatment of paraquat poisoning. It also summarizes future directions for antidote development based on reports of available potential antidotes and provides ideas for paraquat antidote development.

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and hospital visits for IgE-mediated allergy: A time-stratified case-crossover study in southern China from 2012 to 2019.

BackgroundBecause of the limited epidemiological evidence on the association between acute air pollutants and allergy, there is a need to investigate this association, especially between the short-term exposure to air pollution and the serum Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergy.MethodsA total of 39,569 IgE test results and demographic characteristics were obtained in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University between August 2012 and September 2019. Ninety-nine specific allergens were tested according to clinical diagnosis. The logistic regression was used to assess the effects of CO, NO2 and PM2.5 exposure on the risk of sensitization to specific inhalant/food allergens. Generalized additive models with multivariate adjustments were utilized to model the exposure-response relationship. Stratified analyses were performed to estimate the reliability of correlations in various subgroups.FindingsSingle-pollutant models indicate that the 3-day moving average (lag2–4) of CO, PM2.5 or NO2 is associated with the increased risk for allergic diseases related to specific inhaled allergens. In multi-pollutant models, the adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) 95% (Confidence Interval, CI) increases by 8% (95% CI, 2%–15%) for per increment of 0.2 mg/m3 in CO levels, and rises by 8% (95% CI, 2%–13%) for each increase of 16.3 μg/m3 in PM2.5 concentration. The associations are stronger in youngsters (<18, years) but not significantly different by gender. Particularly, a significantly stronger association between PM2.5 exposure and hospital visits for inhaled allergy is observed in patients who are exposed to lower concentration of SO2 (<10.333 μg/m3) and higher levels of NO2 (≥42.0 μg/m3), as well as patients enrolled after 2017.InterpretationThe short-term exposure to CO/PM2.5 increases the number of hospital visits for IgE-mediated allergy, especially for the sensitization to specific inhalant allergens. 2023 7th International Conference on Data Mining, Communications and Information Technology (DMCIT 2023), was successfully held on May 27, 2023, which was organized by Asia Pacific Institute of Science and Engineering (APISE), and sponsored by Jiangnan University. DMCIT conference has been held for six years since 2017 after successful onsite conferences or virtual conferences. DMCIT 2023 continued its tradition of providing a unique and excellent forum for exchanging research methodologies, exploring practical applications, and fostering innovative ideas.DMCIT 2023 strives to offer networking opportunities to meet and interact with the world-leading scientists, engineers and researchers as well as industrial partners in Core Data Mining, Communication Engineering, Information Technology Applications Topics.The conference was originally scheduled in Chongqing, China from May 26 to 28, 2023. Most authors cannot attend offline with personal reasons, but they can only attend online. As a result of small number of offline participants, it had to be turned into a fully virtual conference via Tencent meeting on May 27, 2023.The proceedings of this year’s edition comprised four main categories: “1. Image Processing and Computer Vision”; “2. Machine Learning and Data Analysis”; “3. Information Technology and Communication Systems”; “4. Optimization and Modeling”. All these submissions were rigorously reviewed by the Program Committee. The research tracks attracted 42 submissions in total, and out of 27 papers were accepted, including countries like Pakistan, Japan, Philippines and China, etc.On the conference day, 9 oral presentations and 18 posters presentation were arranged according to the participants’ choices. Two awards, one best oral presentation award and one best poster presentation award were selected by the end of conference. Four distinguished keynote speakers, including Prof. Shahram Latifi from University of Nevada, Las Vegas (USA); Prof. Yudong Zhang from The University of Leicester (UK) and Prof. João Alexandre Lôbo Marques from University of Saint Joseph, Macau SAR; and Prof. Miaowen Wen from South China University of Technology, delivered excellent speeches, sharing their latest and insightful research ideas.We extend our sincere gratitude to all the authors who submitted their papers to the DMCIT conference. The use of noninvasive imaging technique to detect cancers at an early stage and achieve image-guided cancer therapy provides better opportunities for patients to obtain effective treatment with fewer side effects. To date, photoacoustic (PA) imaging (PAI) is the fastest-growing area of biomedical imaging technology because PAI enables anatomical, functional and metabolic imaging of tumors with high resolution, high contrast and satisfactory penetration depth. However, the sensitivity of PAI to visualize tumors is determined by its endogenous contrast. By contrast, multifunctional nanoprobes have exhibited their potentials as theranostic agents for PAI-guided cancer theranostics.Interestingly, different multifunctional nanoprobes including inorganic and organic nanoparticles have been developed to improve PAI contrast and enhance cancer efficacy. The inorganic nanoprobes consist of the metal nanoparticles such as the Au and Pd, transition metal dichalcogenides such as the MoS2, WS2 nanosheets and CuS2 nanoparticles, and carbon nanomaterials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. In addition to inorganic nanoprobes, organic nanoparticles such as BDT-IID based conjugated polymer dots (Pdots) can also serve as multifunctional nanoprobes for enhanced PAI-guided cancer theranostics.This special issue highlights the latest development of inorganic and organic nanoparticles that range from design of multifunctional nanoparticles to PAI and PAI-guided cancer theranostics. The topics for this special issue include but are not limited to:(1)Development of multifunctional nanoparticles for PAI and PA-based multimodal imaging for cancer detection.(2)Development of organic/inorganic nanoprobes for PAI-guided cancer treatment such as phototherapy and immunotherapy.(3)Development of multifunctional nanoprobes for PAI-guided drug/gene delivery and tumor microenvironments monitoring.It is expected that the selected original and review works from this issue can promote the development of multifunctional PA probes for cancer detection and treatment.AcknowledgmentsWe want to take this opportunity to thank the authors and reviewers for their contributions to this special issue.
