Abstract

The image of the traditional European-American garden is quite different from that of China and Japan. The first is formal, geometric and symmetrical, and the second is natural, curvilinear and picturesque. In some measure the characteristics named apply to other arts in the two regions, especially to painting and architecture, of which the latter bears the greatest affinity to gardens inasmuch as building and grounds are often designed in relation to one another.
