Abstract

It is with great interest we read the article by S. Dammas et al. on ‘Identification of small lung nodules at autopsy: implications for lung cancer screening and overdiagnosis bias’, which appeared in the July 2001 issue of Lung Cancer [ [1] Dammas S. Patz E.F. Goodman P.C. Identification of small lung nodules at autopsy: implications for lung cancer screening and overdiagnosis bias. Lung Cancer. 2001; 33: 11-16 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (42) Google Scholar ]. The authors conclude that autopsies do not identify all small pulmonary nodules found at CT and that the true incidence of small clinically insignificant and thus, undiagnosed lung cancer (LC) is unknown. They further state that overdiagnosis of LC may be more important than previously recognised. These conclusions deserve some comment.
