Abstract

Using Skylab extreme ultraviolet images of the solar disk, we have identified plumelike features inside low-latitude coronal holes undergoing limb passage. Like their polar counterparts, these diffuse Mg IX structures are located above enhancements in the weak neon and helium background emission within the coronal hole. We conclude that coronal plumes are not unique to the polar regions but may occur in open magnetic regions at any latitude.
