Abstract

High resolution light and immunolight microscopy were carried out on a series of human tissues containing infectious agents embedded in Spurr plastic. Studies in our laboratory demonstrated that bacteria, fungi, and protozoans can beclearly delineated in plastic embedded tissues with conventional and special stains. The resolution far exceeds that attained from paraffin embedded tissue, providing the pathologist with greatly improved image information. The technique can also be applied to both fresh formalin fixed tissue and tissue extracted from paraffin blocks. (The J Histotechnol 15:293, 1992)
