Abstract

Question: Human endogenous retroviruses (ERV) represent approximately 10% of our DNA. The majority of these ERV loci are inactivated by mutations that disrupt open reading frames of the viral gag, pol, and env proteins. In addition, expression of most ERV elements is stringently shut off by epigenetic mechanisms. Reactivation of ERV expression has been observed in several diseases, ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases.
