There have been great poets, great scientists, and great Jewish philosophers, but few or no Jewish painters. The visual arts have never been strong point of Jews.1 The refrain is familiar.2 Countless authorities and critics repeat it. The refrain is also ambiguous. To declare that the visual arts have never been strong point of is to utter both a compliment and an insult.
