The organizing committee is at the centre of the sport event's planning. The complex nature of sports events and their organizing committees require the assistance of multiple theoretical perspectives to grasp its nature and functioning. This chapter provides an overview of what an organizing committee is, its structure and functions, and who is included within it. The types of workforce an event can have vary; they include full-time or part-time paid staff, pre-event and event-time volunteers, secondees, consultants, contractors, and event gypsies. The chapter briefly presents the various stakeholder relationships the organizing committee has. The organizing committee goes through three modes – planning, implementation, and wrap-up during its lifecycle and deals with many different issues. The chapter critically discusses research associated with organizing committees, focusing notably on their role in relation to normative aspects such as legacy. It concludes by suggesting future research directions.

Originally focusing on the concept of stereochemistry, central to both chemistry and biology, it evolved over the year to an interdisciplinary conference, where synthetic chemistry meets chemical biology, materials science, theoretical chemistry or even art, stretching everyone's boundaries and inspiring out of the box ideas. With the JSP (Junior Fellowship Program) and an increasing involvement of industry participants and speakers, the conference has become a meeting point between different generations and career paths with the support of the Swiss Chemical Society. The continuing success of the conference, which is often already overbooked in December of the preceding year, may be explained by not only scientific excellence, but also a set of unique traditions together with a drive to evolve to stay in contact with the most exciting research areas. Among these traditions, one can mention the not disclosed program and participant list, uninterrupted exchanges and discussions after the lectures, as well as the special role of the Bürgenstock president. In fact, the latter plays a central role by selecting the speakers for the conference and participating to the selection of the JSP fellows together with the organization committee. He or she will participate three times in a row to the conference, first as vice-president ‘in charge of the weather', then as the president and finally as a more relaxed past president. During the fifty-five editions of the Bürgenstock conference, many leading European, Swiss and Israeli scientists have acted as presidents and contributed to its legend.1 As the organizing committee of the Bürgenstock conference, we are now very pleased to start this collaboration with Helvetica Chimica Acta, the journal of the Swiss Chemical Society at Wiley, to publish each year a special issue as a tribute to the president of the Bürgenstock conference. Past and present participants and speakers of the conference will have the occasion to submit a scientific contribution to this special issue, with full freedom of format (research article, synthetic procedure, perspective or review). This first special issue is dedicated to Prof. Janine Cossy, president of the 55th Bürgenstock conference. It is the occasion for the organization committee to thank Prof. Cossy for her great leadership, especially in the difficult context of the COVID pandemics, which led to two cancellations of the in-person conference in 2020 and 2021. The 55th edition in 2022 was finally a full success, as the scientific community could finally meet again in the exceptional settings of the Swiss Alps in Brunnen.2, 3 In the spirit of the Bürgenstock conference, the contributed articles cover a broad range of topics, from synthetic methods to catalysis to chemical biology, and come from both academia and industry. We hope you will enjoy reading them! The Bürgenstock organizing committee Dr. Fabrice Gallou, Prof. Cristina Nevado, Prof. Francesca Paradisi, Dr. Maud Reiter, Prof. Thomas R. On behalf of Codes+ISSS 20065 Organizing and Program Committees, we would like to welcome you to the 4th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Hardware/Software Co-Design and System Synthesis.Codes+ISSS is the premier event in design of embedded systems hardware, software, and tools. This year we continued building upon the reputation of a high-quality conference by enforcing a rigorous reviewing process, selecting the best submitted papers, and assembling a very exciting program of keynotes, tutorials, special sessions, panels, and regular papers. We received 183 full paper submissions and selected 46 papers for publication, an acceptance rate of 25%. The Program Committee carefully reviewed all papers, with an average of over 5 reviews per paper. The Committee then met face to face for detailed discussions on the papers. Selections were not based on quotas for each topic area, but instead, papers from one topic area were compared to other topic areas in order to select the absolute best set of papers overall. We hope you will find this year's papers to represent some of the most important advances in theory and practice of system-level design and related areas.Codes+ISSS program is uniquely complemented by tutorials and workshops. This year's tutorials cover state-of-the-art topics such as UML for SoC Design and Automotive Electronics, and like last year, tutorials are free to all registered attendees. CODES+ISSS hosts two full-fledged workshops, namely ESTIMedia and a UML hands-on workshop. ESTIMedia has been very successful in previous years and its special emphasis on multimedia-related topics effectively complements the main Codes+ISSS program. The hands-on workshop on UML is a first of its kind in Codes+ISSS and gives attendees the opportunity to learn UML in practice. After a successful debut last year, Embedded Systems Week (ES Week) takes place again, this time expanded with the addition of CASES (a leading conference on architecture and compilers). Codes+ISSS, EMSOFT and CASES are collocated with all sessions in parallel, and registrants to one conference can attend sessions in all three conferences. Moreover, the technical programs of the three conferences, including keynotes, special sessions, panels, tutorials and workshops, have been carefully planned to avoid major overlaps and complement each other. ES Week is uniquely positioned to offer the best technical content for attendees in the areas of embedded systems design, tools, software, architecture and compilers.Codes+ISSS owes its high technical quality to the dedicated members of the Steering Committee, Organizing Committee, Technical Committee and numerous reviewers who contributed their time and expertise to ensure the quality of the conference. We thank them all full heartedly. We would also like to thank our sponsoring societies, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS) and Computer Society (CS) and the Council of Electronic Design Automation (CEDA), the ACM SigDA, SigBED and SigMICRO. Moreover, we would like to thank our several industrial contributors, without which the conference would not be possible. The excellent level of industrial support demonstrates that Codes+ISSS is able to bridge both academia and industry interests. Finally, thanks are due to all the people who submitted their work to the conference and to the attendees whose active participation is relied upon for lively and interesting technical exchanges.

Abstract. In the midst of the current pandemic that challenges our world, scientific research should not keep back, but instead persist, inform, inspire and resolve. In particular, for Geographic Information Science, we cannot help but highlight the relevance of spatial analysis methods and related technologies dating back to Dr. John Snow’s work on identifying the source of cholera outbreak in the district of Soho in London in 1854. Across the centuries, common problems and new perspectives blend to model our changing planet, temporal trends, human behavior and data abundance. The theme of this special collection of research papers rests within the field of Geographic Information Science and Technology. These papers were submitted and accepted as full papers at Agile2020, the 23rd annual international conference of the Association for Geographic Information Laboratories in Europe, originally scheduled to take place in Chania, Greece, on the 16th – 19th June of 2020. However, the known COVID - 19 related conditions led the AGILE Council and the Scientific and Organizing committees, to cancel the Conference, placing above all the safety of the participants. This is the first year that the AGILE Conference proceedings will be published as Open Access online. This coincidence can only partly make up for the loss of personal interaction that the AGILE community enjoys at their annual meetings.AGILE seeks to ensure that new perspectives on research and education in Geographic Information Science are addressed to help shaping the future European research agenda in this field. Hence, these research papers cover a broad range of topics on smart cities, social sensing, commuting, activity patterns, wayfinding and natural language modeling, self-driving cars and tourist recommendation systems, natural disaster and crime patterns, spatiotemporal data processing including interpolation and convolutional neural networks implementations. For the first time in these Conference series, submissions were strongly encouraged to adhere to the AGILE Reproducible Paper Guidelines. In addition to the peer review, a reproducibility review by an independent expert committee took place as part of the Reproducible AGILE initiative (https://reproducible-agile.github.io/). If significant parts of a computational workflow could be reproduced, the paper was awarded the "AGILE Reproducible" badge. The badge links to a report which documents the completed steps and results of a specific reproduction. We would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the whole AGILE community, authors and reviewers that contributed to the AGILE 2020 Conference, the Local Organizing and Reproducibility Committees and the AGILE Council that was always eager to support all the necessary steps to mitigate these challenging circumstances.

Although the scientific event organization in Ukraine in 2022 as a reality has guidance on how to perform when the rocket strike alarm, the CSIT organizing committee does its best to support our scientists at risk. To draw even more attention, the conference organization committee took an opportunity to improve the overall style of the conference. First, we began by identifying a set of tools for organizing and supporting the conference, which are or can be carriers of the visual components of the corporate style of the conference. From them, relevant corporate identity attributes were selected for the conference taking place in online mode. Among the developed series of the visual components of the conference, identity elements were chosen that will determine the general stylistics. The difficulty in deciding on corporate identity attributes is many experts, i.e., participants of the organizational and program committees of the conference, which led to the use of a group expert approach.

The Russian open scientific conference “Modern problems of remote sensing, radar, wave propagation and diffraction” (MPRSRWPD) 2021 took place in the Russian Federation in the city of Murom on May 25-27, 2021.The conference has been held at the Murom Institute of Vladimir State University since 1991. The organizers of the Conference MPRSRWPD 2021 are the Russian Academy of Sciences, diverse scientific organizations and a number of leading universities of Russia.Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic limited the travel of scientists and personal participation in the conference. Under these conditions, the Organizing Committee decided to hold MPRSRWPD 2021 completely online with remote meeting control from the Murom Institute.Such a decision required a different organization of the conference itself, the need for more precise compliance with the schedule for presentations, taking into account the differences between the time zones in which the speakers were located. Thanks to the efficient work of the Organizing Committee, these difficulties were successfully overcome.Of course, this format of the conference significantly narrowed the opportunities for personal communication of participants, practically eliminating discussions during breaks and after the end of meetings, which has always been an indispensable attribute of this conference. Nevertheless, the discussion of the reports took place, and at the end of the meetings, a general discussion took place in the format of a “round table”.Sixty two reports on the issues of wave propagation and diffraction, remote sensing, methodological and instrumental issues of sounding, and measurement accuracy were presented at the conference. Thirty four papers of them were recommended by the Program and Organizing Committees for publication in the JPCS collection. Twenty eight articles based on the results of peer review met the standards of IOP Publishing. The Organizing Committee expresses its gratitude to everyone who, at this difficult time, managed to find opportunities to participate in the conference, to everyone the organization of the work of the meetings depended on, and especially to our esteemed experts-I. Nasyrov, PhD, Associate Professor, A. Padokhin, PhD, Associate Professor, V. Pozhidaev, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Chief Researcher, B. Sedunov, PhD, Associate Professor, and I. Yusupov, PhD, Associate Professor, whose high qualifications ensured the compliance of the scientific level of the submitted articles with the requirements of IOP Publishing. We express our sincere regret that Yuri Ya. Ruzhin, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Chief Researcher, recipient of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, Member of the National Geophysical Committee, one of the active organizers of our conferences for many years, passed away during the preparation of the Conference. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Committees, Organizing Committee, Executive editor, are available in the pdf

Taishotoyama International Symposium was established to educate and encourage young Japanese scientists. This was accomplished through the great efforts of 4 members of the organizing committee, Prof. T. Takemoto, Prof. K. Kobayashi, Prof. A.S. Tarnawski and Prof. G. L. Eastwood. I was assigned the great responsibility of the post of Secretary General by the organizing committee. The first International Symposium was held in 1987 at Shimoda Central Hotel. After a long series of advanced scientific planning and good organization, the symposium has established a brilliant tradition and a firm place in the scientific community. The 14th Taishotoyama International Symposium on Gastroenterology was planned to be held from April 14th to 16th at Regal Royal Hotel in Tokyo, however, it was canceled due to the massive earthquake that occurred off the coast of East Japan in March, 2011 and the subsequent major tsunami. Accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant of Tokyo Electronic Power Co. resulted in radioactive contamination and residents living near the nuclear power plant had to take refuge in distant locations. As devastated districts in several Tohoku Prefectures are currently undergoing re-construction, the Organizing Committee and Taishotoyama Pharmaceuticals decided to hold the 15th Symposium again in 2013 in order to continue the tradition and provide educational concepts that support and encourage the research minds and scientific prowess on the international stage. On this occasion I am extremely delighted to have the opportunity to discuss the latest topics in gastroenterology, which have progressed over past three years and to inform you again that I will be presiding over the 15th Symposium in Tokyo on September 26–28, 2013. The topics to be discussed by the organizing committee are: 1. GI Mucosal Injury and Repair, 2. GI inflammation and 3. Cancer Research of the GI tract. The organizing committee sincerely requests that all participants submit a large number of papers, and to present the impressive results of their scientific efforts in order to add to the excitement of the final symposium. All things considered, and to our great regret, this international symposium finally came to end this year. However, we take pride in this symposium which has continued to educate and encourage many young Japanese scientists since 1987 and has sent a huge number of contributions on gastroenterology all over the world. All of the papers involving invited foreign speakers will be published in two installments in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the direction of Editor in chief, Prof. Mamoru Watanabe. Finally, on behalf of the Organizing Committee for the Taishotoyama International Symposium, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the earnest and heart-felt cooperation and strong support we have received especially from Mr. Akira Uehara, The Chairman, Mr. Akira Ohira, The President, and Mr. Yoshiaki Sasaki, executive Director of Taishotoyama Pharmaceuticals.
