Abstract
Calcite single crystals were successfully grown from the H 2O-CO 2-CaCO 3 system by the hydrothermal method under control led CO 2 pressure. The maximum growth rate, 45 μm/day, was achieved under CO 2 pressure of 70 MPa and H 2O pressure of 35 MPa. The crystal obtained at a high growth rate had many cracks, which brought about poor transparency. The other combinations of CO 2-H 2O pressures caused a decrease in the growth rates. Transparent calcite single crystals were grown on a seed crystal at a relatively low growth rate.
