Abstract

Abstract Hydrodictyon reticulatum L. Lagerheim (”water net”) is recorded for the first time in New Zealand. This distinctive alga is present at two localities associated with a small, unnamed creek, at Welcome Bay, Tauranga (Bay of Plenty). It is present at a commercial hatchery which supplies imported fish and aquatic plants to aquarists, and in an ornamental pond 1 km upstream of the hatchery. The most likely source of this material was its unintentional importation with plants or fish to the hatchery. It has a high potential to spread within New Zealand and become a nuisance.
