Abstract

This paper summarizes experience with the design of robust active control systems employed together with passive control elements in a hybrid system to control the seismic response of buildings. Particular interest is directed to applying an iterative redesign method that first designs the passive control elements using numerical optimization. The active control system is then designed using robust control design methods and the passive system is iteratively redesigned. Simulation results for representative earthquakes are presented, and the interaction between the active and passive control systems is discussed.
