Determinants of cross-border cultural integration: Case studies of the EU Basque and Upper Rhine cross-border regions
  • Nov 10, 2024
  • European Urban and Regional Studies
  • Ahmed Bakry + 1 more

The spatial integration of cross-border regions is a complex multidimensional process. Cultural integration across borders is a crucial element in broader cross-border regionalism and the intensification of economic transactions. While cultural integration has been viewed as a contingent ontological determinant for establishing cross-border integration and cooperation, there is a lack of empirical evidence on cultural integration. This study sets out a new methodological framework to measure the extent of spatio-cultural integration in cross-border regions. A P-ITEMS model containing six determinants of cultural integration was developed using primary data obtained through mixed methods of qualitative perceptual mapping and quantitative questionnaires. Two European Union cross-border regions – the Basque region and the Upper Rhine region – were selected as case studies, representing two different contexts with varied characteristics, to assess the extent to which the methodological framework can enhance understanding of the cultural integration process. The study shows that this new model can provide a range of findings and perspectives depending on the qualitative or quantitative methodological lens applied. The model revealed that the Basque cross-border region is strongly culturally integrated from both a qualitative and quantitative perspective, with high cross-border interactions, and its residents on both sides of the national border share a common perceptual image of the cross-border region despite its difficulty. In contrast, in the Upper Rhine cross-border region, this joint perceptual representation is missing from the qualitative data; however, the quantitative data indicates that considerable cultural interactions and integration take place.

Wang, J.; Zhen, C.; Zhang, W., and Wen, F., 2020. Development strategy for the integration of marine culture and the tourism economy, with the Ultima Thule scenic spot in Sanya as an example. In: Gong, D.; Zhang, M., and Liu, R. (eds.), Advances in Coastal Research: Engineering, Industry, Economy, and Sustainable Development. Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 106, pp. 29–33. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.China has a long coastline, with a rich and colorful marine culture. However, the development vitality of marine scenic spots has long been limited by a traditional “ticket economy” business model. In the era of all-for-one tourism, it is urgent that the quality and competitiveness of scenic spots be improved through integration of the marine culture and the tourism economy. Under the background of national tourist development, promotion of the integration of culture and tourism is vigorously necessary to transform and upgrade the ticket economy. Based on the theory of value co-creation, this article used the Ultima Thule scenic spot in Sanya, China, as an example. Four suggestions are put forward: a strategy for digging deeply into Ultima Thule's cultural resources and increasing the integration of its culture and tourism, optimizing the types of cultural and travel business experiences and deepening the integration of culture and tourism, innovating the marketing methods for cultural travel and expanding the breadth of integration of culture and tourism, and building a joint construction and sharing mechanism to enhance the intensity of cultural and tourism integration. These strategies are of reference value for promoting the integration of the marine culture and tourist economy and breaking through the predicament of development for similar marine cultural scenic spots in China.

  • Randolf M Agup + 1 more

Mathematics education should become holistic, relevant, and connected with learners’ everyday lives, including their culture. This qualitative study aimed to explore the integration of the Ilokano culture in Teaching Mathematics at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, through a case study qualitative research approach. Findings showed that there is an integration of Ilokano culture in teaching mathematics in UNP. Ilokano culture is primarily used to motivate students or introduce new concepts. The integration of Ilokano culture establishes connections between the faculty and their students and their cultural heritage. The faculty participants also used culture-related examples and problems to emphasize mathematical concepts. Various elements of Ilokano culture are embedded in the teaching-learning process, the language, practices, values, known figures, landmarks, and crafts included. A culture-responsive structure exists in UNP as evidenced by its vision, mission, and developmental goals, which stress preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage. Difficulties in Ilokano culture integration include inadequacy in knowledge about culture and formal preparation in culture integration and culture-relevant resource materials. The integration of culture into the mathematics curriculum makes it more relevant to the students; thus, it is recommended that teachers design learning experiences in mathematics classes based on the students' cultural background.

  • Journal of Psychosociological Research in Family and Culture
  • Yoko Wong + 1 more

Objective: The objective of this study is to explore the role of cultural adaptation in interfaith marriages, focusing on how couples navigate religious differences, integrate cultural practices, and manage identity negotiation. Methods: This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with 20 participants who have been in interfaith marriages for at least three years. Participants were selected using purposive sampling to ensure diversity in cultural and religious backgrounds. Data were collected until theoretical saturation was achieved and were analyzed using NVivo software. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify key themes and subthemes related to communication strategies, religious practices, cultural integration, emotional support, and identity negotiation. Results: The analysis revealed five main themes: communication strategies, religious practices, cultural integration, emotional support, and identity negotiation. Couples employed various communication strategies such as open dialogue, conflict resolution, and non-verbal communication to bridge cultural gaps. Joint religious practices and celebrations, as well as respectful handling of dietary restrictions, were crucial in fostering mutual respect. Cultural integration was facilitated through adopting traditions, adapting attire, and engaging in social networks. Emotional support from spouses, families, and communities played a significant role in maintaining marital stability. Identity negotiation involved balancing individual and joint identities, dealing with societal perceptions, and educating others about their interfaith marriage. Conclusion: The study underscores the complex and nuanced strategies interfaith couples use to navigate cultural adaptation. Effective communication, mutual respect in religious practices, cultural integration, emotional support, and identity negotiation are critical for the success of interfaith marriages. The findings highlight the need for supportive legal frameworks and societal acceptance to facilitate the thriving of interfaith unions. This study contributes valuable insights into the broader processes of cultural adaptation and integration in a globalized world.

  • Apr 15, 2024
  • International Journal of English Language Teaching
  • Bundit Anuyahong + 2 more

This research investigates the role of culture in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) pedagogy and its implications for language teaching. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative interviews with educators and focus groups with students to explore how cultural integration impacts learner motivation, engagement, and communicative competence. Educators and students from diverse cultural backgrounds participated in the study. Educators, selected for their experience in TEFL and cultural content integration, were interviewed to understand their perspectives on cultural integration strategies and perceived impacts on students. Meanwhile, student focus groups provided insights into their experiences with culturally integrated lessons and their development of intercultural competence. Qualitative data analysis involved thematic coding of interview transcripts and focus group discussions, while quantitative data from surveys assessed attitudes towards cultural integration and its frequency in teaching practices. Results indicate that while educators vary in their integration approaches—ranging from daily to infrequent—literature, music, and traditional customs are commonly integrated elements. Students overwhelmingly perceive cultural integration positively, noting increased motivation and a deeper understanding of language contexts. Findings highlight the critical role of cultural awareness in enhancing language learning outcomes, fostering intercultural competence, and preparing learners for global communication contexts. Recommendations include enhancing teacher training in cultural competence and expanding resources to support diverse cultural content in TEFL curricula.

Integration of Culture in English Courses for Korean Students in the Philippines
  • Oct 7, 2012
  • IAMURE International Journal of Social Sciences
  • Safary Wa-Mbaleka + 1 more

Culture, a complex interdisciplinary topic, has never been exhausted. One of the most recent topics that have gained attention in the field of applied linguistics is the integration of second cultures in English as a second language (ESL) courses. Studies, on the integration of culture in ESL courses, continue to show that not much attention has been given to the explicit instruction of culture as an integral part of teaching English to speakers of other languages. The Philippines, a country in the Outer Circle, presents an even more interesting case because English is used, not as a second or foreign language, but rather as a lingua franca to help bridge communication between Filipinos from varied linguistic backgrounds. The goal of this study was to investigate the current instructional practices of integrating culture in English languages courses and how teachers learn these practices. This paper presents the findings of a quantitative descriptive study that investigated how English teachers integrate culture in their courses in the Philippines, and how they learn to do so. A survey of 64 teachers, most of whom were nonnative speakers of English, revealed limited current practices of culture integration in the teaching of English courses for Korean students. Based on the findings, this paper proposes some instructional implications for this unique and intricate setting where English is used as a lingua franca. • He Lingyan

The construction of the Ganzi section of the Long March National Cultural Park is of great significance for the development of the entire Ganzi Prefecture and can drive the integration of culture and tourism in the region. Currently, the feasibility of achieving high-quality development of the integration of culture and tourism in the Ganzi section of the Long March National Cultural Park is strong, but there are also some constraints, such as the lack of in-depth exploration and research, and the lack of a virtuous cycle between development and conservation. The integration of Long March culture and tourism resources is also challenged by regional factors and economic development, and the lack of systematic, forward-looking, and innovative planning. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a scientific plan for the development of the integration of culture and tourism in the Ganzi section of the Long March National Cultural Park, strengthen the protection and excavation of cultural heritage, improve the quality and competitiveness of cultural tourism products, strengthen cooperation and linkage with surrounding areas, stimulate the vitality and innovation of the integration of Long March culture and tourism development, and achieve the goal of high-quality development of the integration of culture and tourism in the Ganzi section of the Long March National Cultural Park. This can be achieved by adhering to a virtuous cycle of protecting and utilizing Long March cultural resources, exploring and utilizing the inherent value of Long March cultural resources, strengthening cultural brand building, and cultivating sustainable development momentum for the industry through market-oriented, diversified, and sustainable Long March cultural tourism operation and management.

Cultural Integration in Germany
  • Sep 27, 2012
  • Amelie Constant + 2 more

This chapter studies the integration process of immigrants in Germany by comparing certain immigrant groups to natives, differentiating them by gender and immigrant generation. The indicators that capture the cultural integration of immigrants are, in particular, differences in marital behaviour, language abilities, ethnic identification, and religious activity. A special feature of our data is the rich information about overall life satisfaction, risk aversion, and political interest. The chapter employs the latter indicators, comparing immigrants to natives and differentiating by ethnic origin, gender, and immigrant generation. This allows for an analysis of differences by ethnic groups and their evolution over time, and enables us to study in depth the cultural integration processes of immigrants. Besides cultural integration, the chapter also studies the economic integration of immigrants via female labour force participation. Empirical findings suggest that there are differences among immigrant groups and between immigrants and native Germans; the most significant differences exist vis-à-vis ethnic origin, gender, and generation. However, differences seem to diminish for the second generation. This indicates a greater adaptation to German norms and habits, and thus a better cultural, socio-economic and political integration of second-generation immigrants in Germany.

Through attachment to settlement: social and psychological determinants of migrants’ intentions to stay
  • Dec 2, 2018
  • Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies
  • Sabina Toruńczyk-Ruiz + 1 more

Previous research shows that structural, cultural and social integration determine migrants’ settlement intentions. We move beyond such explanations, and consider whether psychological integration at a local level may underlie the relation between social integration and the intention to stay, while accounting for structural and cultural integration. We conceptualise social integration as ties with the natives, and access to emotional and instrumental social capital in the destination country. Psychological integration is captured by place attachment understood as an emotional bond with the city of residence. We take the case of Ukrainian migrants, currently the largest group of temporary migrants in Europe. Using survey data from Warsaw, Poland, we found that migrants having strong ties with Poles were more strongly attached to Warsaw, which in turn increased their willingness to stay in Poland. Emotional social capital but not instrumental social capital had an indirect effect on settlement intentions via place attachment, but only for repeat migrants. These findings held independent of the level of structural and cultural integration and length of time spent in Poland. The study points to the importance of psychological integration at a local level and the migrants’ emotional support, in shaping settlement intentions of temporary migrants.
