Abstract

Environmental Information Systems (EnvIS) play an increasingly important role in the inter–disciplinary effort to improve our natural environment. These systems are used for environmental information collection, storage, processing and presentation, environmental modelling and decision support. Human interaction studies have as an objective the development of methods and design practice of EnvISs so that their typical users interact effectively and efficiently with them. The inter–disciplinary character of typical users of EnvISs increases the importance of this effort. In this paper we argue for a user–centred design of EnvISs and present typical user interface examples from a complex environmental information system.
