Abstract
Brunt explains the Chinese system of residence permits (“hukou”) that determines access to healthcare and education. The hukou is inherited and children generally have the right to live only in the birthplace of their parents. In a society characterized by massive migration, this is a huge social and economic problem. The difficulties are illustrated with the stories of two friends. One went to extraordinary lengths to secure a good education: sent to boarding school aged 6, he lived alone from age 13 and put himself through secondary school. He is now a successful young adult with a bright future. The other friend—currently aged 6—is struggling to be able to live with her parents because they now have Beijing hukous but she does not.
