How to Train Your VAE
Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) have become a cornerstone in generative modeling and representation learning within machine learning. This paper explores a nuanced aspect of VAEs, focusing on interpreting the Kullback-Leibler (KL) Divergence, a critical component within the Evidence Lower Bound (ELBO) that governs the trade-off between reconstruction accuracy and regularization. Meanwhile, the KL Divergence enforces alignment between latent variable distributions and a prior imposing a structure on the overall latent space but leaves individual variable distributions unconstrained. The proposed method redefines the ELBO with a mixture of Gaussians for the posterior probability, introduces a regularization term to prevent variance collapse, and employs a PatchGAN discriminator to enhance texture realism. Implementation details involve ResNetV2 architectures for both the Encoder and Decoder. The experiments demonstrate the ability to generate realistic faces, offering a promising solution for enhancing VAE-based generative models.

Reviewed by: How to Train Your Dragon by John Powell Denise E. Finnegan-Hill John Powell. How to Train Your Dragon. Los Angeles: Omni Music Publishing, 2020. [xvi, 384 p. ISBN 9781734507928 (paperback), $85] Rarely does one find a published copy of a film’s score, particularly from a film as recent as 2010. The film How to Train Your Dragon received critical acclaim when it was first released with many reviewers acknowledging the role of the score in the film’s success. The score by composer John Powell, received its own recognition with an Oscar nomination for Best Score and winning Film Score of the Year from the IFMCA Awards. The score is written for full orchestra with a variety of folk and non-Western instruments. The published score is great for anyone studying film music, presenting a unique opportunity to dive deep into a newer score without having to rely on one’s ear and assist in widening the base of film music research. The lack of scholarly research on Powell, limited to only a composition dissertation chapter by Jennifer Dirkes (“Synchretic Analysis and Storyboard Scores: The Musical Rhythm of Filmic Elements,” [PhD diss., University of California-Los Angeles, 2017]) and my own Master’s thesis (“Thematic Development in John Powell’s Score for How to Train Your Dragon (2010),” [MM thesis, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2020]) leaves much room for exploration of Powell and the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. The How to Train Your Dragon score is unique to Omni Music Publishing’s collection as both the only score by Powell and the only score for an animated film, helping to diversify the emerging “canon” brought about by the limited publication of film scores. The published score will allow more scholars to explore Powell’s thematic technique and other aspects of his composition style that have not yet been researched. The thematically driven nature of the score that is in many ways more akin to the classic scores of John Williams, than other scores of the same year such as Oscar nominees The Social Network (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross) and Inception (Hans Zimmer) is possibly why Omni chose this score for publication alongside well-known composers like James Horner, Bernard Herrmann, and Elmer Bernstein. The publication was successful enough that Omni is set to publish the score for the second How to Train Your Dragon film in fall of 2021. Apart from Batman and Batman Returns (Danny Elfman) this is the only other series of scores Omni has published to date. Pending the success of the second score, I’m sure they will consider releasing the score for the third film as well, giving scholars the opportunity to study the entire franchise more easily. The publication is a beautiful edition, clearly laid out for ease of study. Abridged film credits and a relatively short introductory “analysis” of some [End Page 466] main themes and where they appear in the score are included. The film credits page mentions only those involved in the music production apart from the directors and main voice actors. This page is helpful to see everyone involved in the music production besides Powell, including a long list of orchestrators and arrangers, reminding us that although Powell will get credit for every choice made in the film’s music, it is not likely that he made every small decision, an important thing to note when writing about film music. Unfortunately, there is no indication of which orchestrator or arranger worked on which parts of the score. One may assume the names are listed by amount of contribution since they are not in alphabetical order, but there is no confirmation of this idea. At the bottom of the same page are the “book credits” showing that Powell and others from his production company, 5 Cat Studios, were involved in creating this publication. Timothy Rodier from Omni Music Publishing is also listed and credited with the layout and design of the book, but unfortunately there is no indication of how much input Powell had in the publication’s production and could possibly be listed as a courtesy or simply because the publisher went through...

BackgroundExecutive functions are higher cognitive control functions, which are essential to physical and psychological well-being, academic performance, and healthy social relationships. Executive functions can be trained, albeit without broad transfer, to this date. Broad transfer entails the translation of improved cognitive functions to daily life (behaviors). The intervention Train your Mind was designed to train executive functions among elementary school children aged 9 to 11 years, and obtain broad transfer in terms of enhanced physical activity, healthy eating, and socioemotional regulation.ObjectiveThis paper aims to describe the cluster randomized trial to test the effectiveness of the Train your Mind intervention.MethodsTrain your Mind was integrated into the existing school curriculum for 8 months (25 weeks excluding holidays). The effectiveness of the intervention was tested in a cluster randomized trial comprising 13 schools, 34 groups (school classes), and 800 children, using a battery of 6 computer tasks at pre- and postmeasurement. Each of the 3 core executive functions was measured by 2 tasks (Flanker and Go/No-Go; N-Back and Running Span; Attention Switching Task and Dots/Triangles). Moreover, we administered questionnaires that measure emotion-regulation, cognitive errors, physical activity, dietary habits, and the psycho-social determinants of diet and physical activity. Body mass index was also measured. Multilevel analyses will account for clustering at the school and group levels, and randomization took place at the school level.ResultsResults are currently being analyzed.ConclusionsThe main purpose of this study is to test Train your Mind’s effectiveness in enhancing executive functions. Second, we investigate whether increased executive functions lead to improved physical activity and healthy eating. If found effective, executive function training could easily be integrated into school curricula everywhere, and as such, boost health, academic performance, and emotion-regulation of elementary school children, in a cost-effective manner.Trial RegistrationNetherlands Trial Register NTR5804; http://www.trialregister.nl/trialreg/admin/rctview.asp?TC=5804 (Archived by WebCite at http://www.webcitation.org/6z9twosJ8)Registered Report IdentifierRR1-10.2196/7908

ISBN 9780374314187 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 4-7 Carl realizes he’s blessed with a really good single father—attentive, ethical, engaged in his community, and in his way a solid and reliable provider even though what [End Page 27] he provides is a trailer set in an industrial zone, food either homegrown or salvaged from dumpsters, and clothing sourced from garage sales or deep discount bulk buys. Dad’s commitment to cheap is based on firm philosophical belief that barter is the best form of commerce, and Carl respects that. As a boy on the cusp of his teens hoping to catch the approving eye of classmate Peg, though, Carl knows that riding a homemade recumbent bike to school and wearing secondhand pink overalls embroidered with cute sayings isn’t going to get the job done. Inspired by a puppy-training pamphlet in a bag of kibble, Carl decides that a system of gentle negative and subtle positive reinforcement will steer his dad away from the dumpster and garage sale circuit and into the world of cash transactions and middle-school-worthy goods. Carl’s recount of the training program, its fallout on his best friend Pooder and skunk-shredding pet pit bull Carol, and its satisfying if unpredicted conclusion are relayed here in often hilarious detail via episodes that ring like updated Jean Shepherd. Much too often, the mental aspect of sport performance is overlooked. While all top athletes are in outstanding physical condition and technically exceptional, mental preparation is often what separates the best from the rest. This is just as true for young athletes as it is for pros and Olympians. And even though relatively few athletes will ever reach the top of their sport, the attitudes and life lessons learned from mental training—such as motivation, confidence, focus, perseverance, and resilience—will serve them well in all aspects of their lives. In Train Your Mind for Athletic Success: Mental Preparation to Achieve Your Sports Goals, Dr. Jim Taylor uses his own elite athletic experience and decades of working with some of the world’s best athletes to provide competitors of every ability with insights, practical exercises, and tools they can use to be mentally prepared when it really counts. His Prime Sport System explores the attitudes that lay the foundation for athletic success, the mental obstacles that can hold athletes back, the preparations they must take, the mental muscles they should strengthen, and the mental tools they need to fine tune their competitive performances. Most importantly, Dr. Taylor shows athletes practical strategies they can use to become mentally strong so they can perform their best when it matters most. Train Your Mind for Athletic Success goes well beyond the typical mental skills that are discussed in other mental training books. Readers will not only learn why mental preparation is so important to athletic success, but also where they personally are in each area thanks to brief mental assessments in each section of the book. In addition, each chapter includes exercises to show athletes how to incorporate mental training directly into their overall sport training regimen. The most comprehensive and in-depth book on mental preparation for athletes available, Train Your Mind for Athletic Success is an essential read for athletes, coaches, and parents.

We developed the How to Train Your Robot curriculum to empower middle school students to become conscientious users and creators of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As AI becomes more embedded in our daily lives, all members of society should have the opportunity to become AI literate. Today, most deployed work in K-12 AI education takes place at strong STEM schools or during extracurricular clubs. But, to promote equity in the field of AI, we must also design curricula for classroom use at schools with limited resources. How to Train Your Robot leverages a low-cost ($40) robot, a block-based programming platform, novice-friendly model creation tools, and hands-on activities to introduce students to machine learning. During the summer of 2020, we trained in-service teachers, primarily from Title 1 public schools, to deliver a five-day, online version of the curriculum to their students. In this work, we describe how students' self-directed final projects demonstrate their understanding of technical and ethical AI concepts. Students successfully selected project ideas, taking the strengths and weaknesses of machine learning into account, and implemented an array of projects about everything from entertainment to science. We saw that students had the most difficulty designing mechanisms to respond to user feedback after deployment. We hope this work inspires future AI curricula that can be used in middle school classrooms.

The purpose of this course is to study how to construct a consistent lighting style for animation, as well as, the techniques used to achieve that style. The How to Train Your Dragon franchise and specifically How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is used as a case study. None of the design principles presented here are specific to How to Train Your Dragon, they are basic design principles found in many films, both live action and animated. It is the choice of which design principles to use and how we combine and prioritize them that creates a unique style. The goal is to show that our choices are not random, but carefully constructed to serve a story and the vision of how it needs to be told. Using a single film, which is part of a larger franchise for this study provides two advantages. First, the key to consistent style is making consistent choices. By using a single film we are able to dive deeper into the choices and their motivations and also build a stronger case for demonstrating consistency. Second, having access to before and after examples provides a much clearer visual example of the principles being employed, why they are chosen and then finishing with the mechanics of how they are actually achieved.

ABSTRACTUsability and user experience (UX) methods come from academic environments, where industrial conditions such as time and resources are not of prime importance. Furthermore, usability and UX methods originate from a time when almost all software developments followed a traditional approach, such as the waterfall model. These two facts entail that existing methods often are too resource demanding and complex to apply directly into today’s agile, industrial environments. In this paper we make the claim that methods must be updated and tailored in order to be applicable within the agile, industrial development framework of today. We pursue a solution to simplify well-known methods and to train software developers to perform the UX work. To do this, three methods are modified via an iterative process together with the development of supporting materials. Software developers in three companies are trained in the methods to assess the approach. We find that it indeed is feasible to update and tailor existing usability and UX methods to fit into an agile, industrial environment. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to train developers to perform the usability and UX methods via one-day, in-situ sessions using an ‘instructor’-teaching approach. The training is based on hands-on exercises and real-life tasks. This further boosts the developers’ confidence in performing UX work and promises a better consideration of UX in the development phases. We evaluate our approach through observations of the developers performing the UX tasks on their own at a later point in time.
