Abstract

The kinetics of the internal pH change after the external pH jump of finite amplitude is theoretically analyzed for the suspension system of membrane vesicles in the presence of the pH buffering agent. Under some assumptions the time course of the internal pH change is analytically solved to yield an exact solution. The solution gives us an experimental procedure by which the membrane permeabilities to H + and OH − are separately determined at any desired pH.
