Abstract

The role of nutrition labeling in improving the diet of Americans rests on its ability to provide information that consumers need to maintain health and reduce the risk of disease. Nutrition labeling serves as an essential link between the motivation to make dietary changes and the ability to do so. By providing needed information, nutrition labeling allows for—but does not cause—more healthful food choices. C. L. Taylor and V. L. Wilkening are retired from the US Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, College Park, MD, where they were formerly director and deputy director, respectively, of the Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements.
