Abstract
Imagine a two-lane road. You are trying to turn left, and all the cars behind you are stuck waiting for you to turn. If only the oncoming traffic would pause, just for a few seconds, then you could turn and all the cars behind you could go. It would inconvenience the oncoming traffic a little bit, but it would help you and all the stuck cars a lot.
