Abstract

The article is based on all 3004 news items published on the front pages of The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Times of India, The Indian Express, Dainik Jagran, and Dainik Bhaskar in March 2016.The article shows that 21 states/UTs were highly under-represented on the front pages. Delhi received more coverage than 28 states/UTs put together. JNU received coverage equivalent to seventeen states/UTs. The Art of Living event received more coverage than Haryana. The representation of other states/UTs was often driven by developments that had little direct or immediate connection with the state. For example, most of the coverage of Meghalaya was related to PA Sangma’s death.Ideally, states suffering from human rights violations and development deficit should receive greater coverage on the front pages, but as shown in the article most of such states (e.g., in North East) have received inadequate coverage. I use maps to give a better picture of regional patterns of under-coverage.
