Abstract

Since humans now have considerable experience with many types of computing they have opinions about this technology, ranging from their importance and practicality to their degree of effectiveness, benefits, and use. As we sit here at the end of the second decade of the new century, summarizing world views is difficult to do and the future even more improbable to forecast. But a snapshot in time is better than none. Survey data show that people around the world hold nuanced views of the technology’s role. For sake of simplicity we can divide them into two communities: the general public and those that use/work with/promote/have a stake in the use of IT, from academics to computer scientists and professionals, to CEOs of IT companies. Let’s begin with the public at large and what it thinks.
