Abstract

Integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) affects on performance and microbial populations of nitrifying bacteria were investigated in pilot scale systems with a non-IFAS control. Biomass from the suspended phase in the control system, the suspended phase in the IFAS system, and the attached phases from two aerobic reactors in series were analyzed through batch testing to determine rates of nitrification and populations structures in using quantitative PCR (qPCR). Suspended phases from IFAS and non-IFAS systems yielded similar rates of ammonia removal, which were higher than the attached biomass rates in the first aerobic reactor, while the second aerobic reactor attached growth provided the highest rates of nitrification. Nitrifier populations monitored by qPCR demonstrated the presence of the AOB Nitrosomonas oligotropha and the NOBs Nitrospira and Nitrobacter. Results from mathematical modeling calibrated to process performance was in agreement with qPCR measurements in terms of the relative quantities of AOBs and NOBs in the different phases.
