of the passage of legislation in 1935, which provided for state involvement in Maori housing for the first time, the surveys indicate that the establishment of western-style houses in rural areas was viewed as a key tool in improving Maori health in the years before World War II. Health improvement thmugh housing, however, required that Maori society, particularly family structures and gender relations, undergo transformation.
