Abstract

Abstract I review various phenomena which are currently studied in the hot compound nucleus. A temperature dependent mean-field theory and large amplitude thermal fluctuations are the main components of a statistical approach. I discuss in detail a collective excitation of the hot nucleus, the giant dipole resonance (GDR), and its decay mechanism as a function of temperature and angular momentum. In particular the role of the GDR as a probe of the nuclear shape transitions is examined. Other topics covered are time-dependent fluctuations, useful in the study of dissipation and non-adiabatic effects at finite temperature, and methods to calculate the nuclear partition function and level density beyond the mean-field approximation.
