Abstract

In order to increase Jc of bulk Bi2223 superconductors, a short period heat treatment at a temperature near the melting point of Bi2223 phase was carried out during hot forging. Samples with a relative density of about 90% were prepared by hot pressing. The hot-pressed sample was then hot-forged at 840°C and 9.8MPa in air for 50h, and was also heat-treated at 885°C for 15min during hot forging. The Jc’s were 70, 150 and 600A/cm2(77K, IkOe) for these samples, respectively. For the heat-treated sample, Jc at 77K,0Oe was estimated to be 7000–10000A/cm2 from the magnetic field dependence of Jc. The mechanism for the increase in Jc was discussed in terms of the microstructure of the specimens.
