Abstract

Postnatal depression is the most common complication of the postnatal period. In recent years it has attracted close attention from researchers examining the psychosocial and biological factors involved. This article summarises the current state of knowledge about postnatal psychiatric disorders and their psychosocial correlates and discusses the role of hormones in the genesis and treatment of postnatal depression.
