Abstract

A simple approximate analytical solution to the problem of horizontal absorption of water in unsaturated soils is presented. The soil-water diffusivity is assumed to be an exponential function of soil-water content, which is assumed to be constant at the boundaries. The infinite domain problem is reduced to a finite-domain problem with one boundary at the wetting front, considered as the inflection point of the water-content profile. An integral balance method which is applied twice results in a simple expression for the solution of the problem. A comparison with other methods concludes this paper.
