Abstract

This article examines the evolution of the current understanding of what patellofemoral pain is, or is not, in young people. It focuses on the articular cartilage of the patella because chondromalacia patellae (softened articular cartilage) was almost unanimously presumed to be the primary cause of patellofemoral pain in young people until recently.
