Abstract

The collection of Roman portraits of the Musée Calvet in Avignon is short in number but is particulary interesting because it was made up at quite in ancient time, - it was issued from the room of curios of Esprit Calvet, a 18th century scholar. Among the objects gathered by the physician from Avignon, one of the most beautiful portraits of the series is the head of Tiberius discovered in Avignon. The collection was enriched all along the 19th century, mainly with local findings (from fruitful diggings carried out in Vaison), but also with buyings or gifts, giving the whole set a touch which is not exclusively local.
