Abstract
Hirsutism is a condition marked by excess terminal hair growth in women in areas like the upper lip, chin, abdomen, back, and thighs. This dark, coarse hair may signify hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated androgens, and may be linked to conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenal hyperplasia, or medications affecting hormone levels. Diagnosis and management involve identifying the underlying cause and may include hormonal therapies, lifestyle changes, and cosmetic treatments to control hair growth. This article aims to summarise the causes, differential diagnosis, investigation, and treatment options for hirsuitism affecting patients presenting in primary care.
