Abstract

An unusual triterpenoic acid, hippospongic acid A ( 1), was isolated from the marine sponge Hippospongia sp. and the structure was elucidated on the basis of its spectroscopic data. Compound 1 selectively inhibited the gastrulation of starfish embryos with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 14 μM.
