Abstract
I dedicate this article, in Memoriam, to Professor Sylwester Dworacki, my first guide in Greek texts, with whom I later had the distinguished privilege to frequently discuss diverse issues in philological exegesis. The little-known figure of Hippocrates of Chios has recently attracted strong interest of several scholars, though mainly by historians of mathematics. Aristotle mentioned critically his quadrature of the circle by means of segments or by means of lunules. Aristotle’s commentator Simplicius, citing Eudemus of Rhodos, quoted a longer paraphrase of Hippocrates’ arguments regarding the quadrature of the lunules. Appropriately selected parts from these arguments are given here in Greek, along with their faithful Polish translation. One should carefully understand the critical stance of Aristotle, who in his particular way understood quadrature as the finding of the geometrical mean and, therefore, accused Hippocrates of using false diagrams.

Postać Hippokratesa z Chios uwzględniona została częściowo w słynnej edycji Dielsa-Kranza Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker (1903) w rozdziale o drugich pitagorejczykach (B VIII 42). Jednakże w wydaniu tym pominięty został ważny tekst komentarza Simplikiosa do Fizyki Arystotelesa, referujący za Eudemosem z Rodos dłuższy wywód na temat owej kwadratury księżyczków Hippokratesa z Chios. Diels dokonał edycji tekstu Simpliciusa, a interesujące nas partie tego komentarza były przedmiotem specjalnych dociekań F. Tekst grecki dotyczący Hippokratesa z Chios wraz z angielskim przekładem przedłożył później I. Thomas Ostatniej krytycznej edycji tego tekstu dokonał F. Niestety przez ponad pół wieku nie podjęto nowej edycji tego ważnego tekstu. Mało ogólnie znana postać Hippokratesa z Chios znajduje zainteresowanie głównie historyków matematyki. Inne nowsze opracowania historyków nieco dokładniej wnikają w zawiłości źródeł i wywodów Hippokratesa wokół wspomnianej kwadratury, a także rzecz ujmują w perspektywie dzisiejszej wiedzy matematycznej
