Abstract

The γ-rays emitted when targets of 159Tb and 155, 156Gd are bombarded with protons and α-particles, respectively, have been studied with Ge(Li) detectors and interpreted within the level scheme of 157Dy. The data allow an improved determination of the half-life of the isomeric 11 2 −[505] level and reveal a branch in the isomeric decay which passes through a 9 2 + level at 162 keV. In addition there is evidence that the ground state 3 2 −[521] band, the 11 2 −[505] band and the positive-parity band are observed up to members with spin 21 2 − , 25 2 − and 33 2 + , respectively. The rotational energies and transition probabilities within these three bands are discussed within the framework of the particle-rotor model. Although a qualitative description of the available data can certainly be obtained in this way the deviations between theory and experiment are almost an order of magnitude larger than in 161Dy where the deformation of the nucleus is more developed.
