Abstract

The states at 4226 keV, 5453 keV and 5638 keV in 33P were studied by means of the reaction 30Si ( alpha ,p gamma )33P. New decay modes were observed for the 4226 keV and 5638 keV levels and branching ratios determined. The proton-gamma ray angular correlation of the 1227 keV gamma ray de-exciting the 5453 keV level was measured, using an annular counter telescope to detect the protons, enabling a spin of 9/2 to be assigned to this level. Simultaneous measurement of singles gamma ray angular distributions and linear polarizations led to a negative parity assignment for this level, and indicated that the 5638 keV level is 11/2-. The Recoil Distance Method was used to measure the lifetimes of the 5453 keV (35+or-7 ps) and the 5638 keV (14+or-2ps) levels.
