Abstract

Application of rapid solidification processing generally enables the formation of various supersaturated solutions with fine grain sizes. The subsequent warm extrusion at an appropriate condition causes the improvement of mechanical properties by the homogeneous precipitation of fine intermetallic compounds from the supersaturated solution without distinct grain growth. Rapidly solidified ribbons in MgAlGa system were produced by a single roller melt-spinning method and these were slightly pulverized and extruded in air. The resulting bulks have high specific strengths because of their low density, easy workability caused by 100% elongation at 442 K and a low coefficient of thermal expansion.
