Abstract

Structural variations caused by substitution of Co for Cu in YBa 2Cu 4O y (1-2-4 phase) are studied by HRTEM. Planar defects due to ordered replacement of (CuO) 2 double chain layer with (CuO) single one increase with increasing Co content and Y 2Ba 4(Cu,Co) 7O y (2-4-7 phase) becomes the major phase at 5% substitution. In a crystal containing 3% Co, a new ordered arrangement of two 1-2-4 layers and one 1-2-3 layer is found.
