Abstract
We illustrate the effectiveness of high resolution Fermi surface (FS) mapping of the Bi-2212 based materials in the investigation of the electronic structure of the the high temperature superconductors. In particular, the advantages of the simultaneous combination of the momentum and energy distribution modes of angle-resolved photoemission will be illustrated in the elucidation of the normal state FS topology of these key systems. We show that the use of unpolarised radiation and modulation-free Pb-doped Bi-2212 samples enables the exclusion of a Γcentred Fermi surface in these systems. The true Fermi surface topology is, as physical intuition insists, independent of photon energy, hole-like and takes the form of barrels centred at the (π,π) and (-π,π) points of the two dimensional Brillouin zone.
