Abstract

Single-pass, small signal gains of up to 400 in 1 cm have been measured for the amplification of a Nd:YAG probe beam in a simple, diode side-pumped Nd:YVO 4 slab amplifier using a single, grazing-incidence reflection. The useful small signal gain has been found to be limited by amplified spontaneous emission.
