Abstract

In recent years, code designers have been interested in finding high code rate solutions for coded partial response systems. The focus of the attention has been given to increasing the code rate of modulation codes. In this paper we turn our attention to increasing the code rate of error correction codes designed fur partial response systems. An analysis of low distance preceded input error events illustrates how an error correction code should exploit the structure of these error events in order to achieve an increase in rode rate. We describe a method of using a combination of interleaved Reed-Solomon codes interspersed with uncoded bits to achieve a higher code rate than the classical ECC solution. Simulation results suggest good performance of this scheme.
