Abstract

With the large-scale integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the distribution network and the installation of communication infrastructure the controllability in distribution grids increases. This paper presents a hierarchical distribution network control scheme, which aims to control the active power flow between several voltage levels in real time. In this way distribution grids are able to provide new degrees of freedom for the operation of the transmission grid. In order to achieve this, the presented control scheme uses the flexibility of DERs located in distribution grids. The applicability of the hierarchical distribution network control scheme is demonstrated in a time-domain simulation in a distribution network with a medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV) level.
