Abstract

Abstract The question of whether the Greek war dead were heroized has been repeatedly addressed and a range of answers returned. It has been claimed simply: ‘Those who fell in battle for their country were made heroes and received a cult.’ On the other hand it has been claimed, ‘it is the exception, not the rule, for those who fall in battle to receive heroic honours’. Finally, it has been denied that the war dead were heroized in the Classical period. Faced with this divergence of opinions, we must review the evidence.
