Abstract

As someone who, as a cash-strapped 16-year-old, spent countless mind-numbing nights working for a well-known high-street chemist, I am unfortunately well placed to comment on how unqualified many retail staff are to offer advice on the safe use of herbal products. A pharmacist, of course, would probably know more than the average shop assistant. But equally, since herbal products are not classed as pharmaceuticals, they might not; and if you were to buy a herbal remedy from a health-food shop then you would, in all likelihood, be completely on your own.
