The Society of Friends of the Catholic University in Lublin was set up in 1922 ( it was added to the register of associations on 1st December, 1922) in order to propagate the ideas of catholic universities and give support to the Catholic University in Lublin. It caused that secular people were implemented to preserve and intensify the religious culture. The Society was established in the period of the II Rzeczypospolita, it was the association mainly for alumnus but in the period after the war it was the only one organisation of social nature, giving support for the Roman Catholic Church in Poland. In the meantime, the Security apparatus was showing interest of the Society and its activity. The most cumulative moment of interference the communistic authorities into Catholic University in Lublin and the association connected with it was on the 1st April 1952 when the rector of the university priest Antoni Słomkowski was arrested. Different events were organised: weeks of Christian culture, sessions and symposiums; it was done to stop the brutal expansion of communism in Poland. Meanwhile and late, the funds were the main problem connected with functioning the Catholic University in Lublin. Thanks to the working the University in Lublin was able to outlast and continue its activity.

Profesor powrócił do Lublina i objął dawną katedrę psychologii ogólnej w Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. We wrześniu 1952 r. został usunięty z Uczelni. W 1956 ks. Józef Pastuszka znów powrócił do pracy na KUL.W lipcu 1969 r. przeszedł na emeryturę, w 1978 r., opuścił Lublin i zamieszkał w domu kapitulnym w Sandomierzu. Zmarł 13 stycznia 1989 r. w Sandomierzu, 17 stycznia w katedrze sandomierskiej odbyły się uroczystości pogrzebowe, 21 stycznia 1989 r. został pochowany w rodzinnej parafii Rzeczniowie.

Introduction. Diagnosing the motives of young people in the choice of life partners seems significant both for widely understood public health, and for forecasting the state of health of potential families. Aim. The purpose of the survey was to get to know students’ opinions on health behaviour of their girlfriends or boyfriends and to determine whether the fact of smoking tobacco influences the choice of the candidate for a life partner. Material and methods. The survey was part of a pilot diagnosis of behaviour, opinions and attitudes of students with regard to health, constituting a basis for the project “Health – Promoting University”. The surveyed group consisted of 207 students from three Lublin universities: Maria-Curie Skłodowska University (UMCS), Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) and Medical University of Lublin (MU). Results. An anonymous diagnostic survey was applied, with the use of random sampling. Thirteen percent of the surveyed women are active smokers, of which the largest group consists of psychology students, and the percentage of smoking men is 29%. Sixteen percent of women and 10% men are ex-smokers. Women more frequently than men are passive smokers. Current tobacco smokers are mostly inhabitants of cities and they are students whose both parents smoke. As many as 1/3 of partners of the surveyed students smoke tobacco. The fact that the future life partner is a smoker is significant, but there were also students for whom the fact that their current or potential partner is or would be a smoker is of no significance. The students smoking tobacco attached to this aspect least importance, and the most importance was attached by students whose parents were both non-smokers. Conclusions. The obtained results directly confirm the thesis that the choice of a life partner is connected with the assessment of his/her health behaviour (in this case – tobacco smoking) and can have an impact on the “health-related quality” of students’ relationships in the future and on the satisfaction of partners forming the relationships. The conducted research confirmed that among the surveyed group of students there is greater tolerance towards tobacco smoking by the partner in the case of persons who are themselves active smokers, and the necessity to undertake anti-smoking measures by universities in the form of support for students who are active and passive smokers.

Service-learning (SL) contributes to systematically anchoring and expanding transfer activities of universities (Third Mission) and cooperation with external community partners in teaching and beyond. Accordingly, SL is considered the silver bullet of holistic education and is increasingly implemented in higher education institutions worldwide, regardless of subject disciplines. This paper illustrates the importance of SL as one of the strategies to fulfill the Third Mission at the Catholic Universities in Lublin (KUL), Poland, and in Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KUEI), Germany, and shows potentials of this concept in the education of students of psychology, didactics and pedagogy. Based on examples of good practice from teaching formats of the three disciplines at KUL and KUEI, concepts and models of SL are outlined.

The main goal of this paper is to present the philosophical (i.e. attained by the light of natural reason) explanation of the marital relationship according to the Polish philosopher Karol Wojtyła. In our research, our attention was focused mainly on his book Love and Responsibility; the early philosophical work of a young, 37 year old Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic University in Lublin, Poland. In his writings, Karol Wojtyła—the future Pope John Paul II—presents marriage as a monogamous, indissoluble relationship between a man and a woman, which grows out of mutual love for the purpose of procreation. Such a relationship is ruled by the „personalistic norm" which says that a person can never, under any circumstances, be a mere object of enjoyment for another person, but can only be the object (co-object) of love. Love is a self-giving for the good of one's counterpart, so Marriage as a personalistic unity persists as long as these persons are alive. Because love is fecund from its very essence, so it is fruitful from its nature. Thus, procreation belongs to the principle ends of marriage. Such an attitude—as K. Wojtyła proves—is opposed to the utilitarian point of view of man and Marriage. According to the utilitarian conception, a person can be used as a means for achieving the highest good, i.e., pleasure.

The analysis of the quality of university websites is of great importance both for the university itself and for candidates for studies or students. A well-designed interface can contribute to the attractiveness of the university in the eyes of potential students as well as facilitate their use by current students and university employees. The article presents the results of a study of the quality of websites of four universities in Lublin: Lublin University of Technology, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, the Higher School of Economics and Innovation and the Higher School of Entrepreneurship and Administration. The study included 32 adult secondary school students, including 16 high school students and 16 technical school students. The research process included four research methods: measurement of task completion time based on a scenario, the SUS questionnaire and the use of the think-aloud protocol and focused interview. The results obtained indicate the strengths and weaknesses of the interfaces of the university websites studied.

International conferences are an important component of the professional calendar of scientists and practitioners in many fields, and are valued as opportunities to establish, create and foster networks, wellbeing and knowledge. The 2020 global pandemic, in prohibiting large gatherings and travel, has provided an opportunity to test the feasibility and implications of a shift from in-person to online conference formats. Avoiding international travel and associated bureaucracy, time and expense could overcome many of the historic injustices preventing many from participating in and benefiting from international conferences, and also avoid the emissions associated with international air travel. However, prior to 2020, there has been resistance to moving these events online because of the perception that the value of conferences cannot be cultivated online. Here, we use the example of the 6th International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC6), which moved online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to explore participants’ perceptions and experiences of an online conference and the potential effects on access and inclusion. Our results show that moving online substantially increased the accessibility of the conference for those who would be unable to attend an in-person event for financial or personal reasons. Results also indicate that the online experience was able to recreate some of the benefits of in-person events, and that many participants are interested in attending online or virtual events in the future. However, the degree of enjoyment experienced or perceived ‘value’ likely relates to the frame of reference of the individual participant and a commitment to actively engage in the program. Reflecting on the success of IMCC6, we conclude that holding international conferences online, or at least including an online element as part of a ‘hybrid’ model, is a significant improvement in the capacity of conferences to meet the moral imperatives of the conservation community by addressing the climate crisis and some of the systemic injustices within the field.

Leonard Górka SVD, długoletni były pracownik i dyrektor Instytutu Ekumenicznego KUL. W swym komentarzu do Dekretu, prezentowanym w licznych publikacjach oraz podczas wykładów, sformułował listę tych zasad, osadzając jednocześnie interpretację dokumentu we właściwym kontekście historycznym. Artykuł akcentuje konieczność hermeneutyki Dekretu o ekumenizmie i przybliża podstawowe elementy hermeneutycznego komentarza do niego opracowane przez lubelskiego teologa.

The aim of the article is to indicate the contribution of prof. Leon Halban and the importance of his involvement in the functioning of this scientific community. The research problem is contained in the question of what determined the professor to courageously enter and actively participate in various aspects of scientific life in the post-war years. The text has been divided into three parts. The first concerns the scholar’s pedigree along with the period of university work in Lviv. The second part presents the professor’s contribution to the activities of three Lublin juridical departments and related teaching and the performance of administrative functions at KUL and UMCS. The third part relates to other forms of scientific activity and popularizing science. The reasoning was carried out on the basis of the historical and legal method and the analysis of archival materials. Obtaining materials from the archives of the Catholic University of Lublin, UMCS, DALO in Lviv and the Manuscript Department of the University of Lublin, their analysis and recalling the relevant literature on the subject allowed us to draw the following conclusions: prof. Leon Halban belongs to the group of people who helped to resume research and teaching activities at the Catholic University of Lublin after the Second World War. He applied to the juridical departments of this university on the basis of working methods learned from the Jagiellonian University in Lviv. He was a pioneer when it comes to teaching historical and legal disciplines at UMCS. His interests also exceeded the strict limits of science. It can certainly be said that such a style of action and commitment was determined by the work ethic of a scientist, the sources of which should be sought in the studies and work at the Jagiellonian University in Lviv.
