Abstract

The Fermilab energy doubler will consist of a ring, 1900 m in diameter, containing approximately 1000 superconducting magnets. A conventional refrigeration system for the doubler would consist of some 12 or 24 individual refrigerators located around the ring. Reliability of these refrigerators needs to be high to ensure uninterrupted operation of the complete system for long periods of time. In order to achieve high reliability, machinery associated with the refrigerators (compressor and expanders) should be centrifugal. It appears that the use of this type of machinery to provide approximately 18 kW of refrigeration at 4.4 K results in a system using a total of 9 MW of power plus 1700 liters/hr of liquid nitrogen (1.2 MW). This power requirement cannot be met by existing local facilities.
