Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper describes the HelicopterSafety Study, a research projectcarried out for A/S Norske Shell and Statoil to provide a decision basisfor future helicopter safety research and development. The study concluded that North Sea helicopter transportation has a fatal accidentrate which is about ten times higherthan that of scheduled airline services, in spite of a generally highstandard of operations, maintenanceand management. A reduction in fatalities of approximately 40%may be achieved over the next 10-15years, through extensive efforts inresearch and development. Although other sources have indicatedthat humanfactors are the dominating concern in worldwide helicopter safety, thisstudy shows that technical reliability is the most promising areafor improving safety in North Sea helicopter transportation.
